South China Seas Relocates to the Heart of Granville Island Public Market
Tucked away in a back aisle of the Granville Island Public Market, South China Seas has been introducing the exhilarating tastes and exotic fragrances of the World’s cuisines to West Coast chefs and adventurous home cooks since 1987.
On June 1st, the plywood comes down and our full to bursting little shop moves into a stunning new store at the heart of the Public Market.
Surrounded by several of Vancouver’s favorite producers and purveyors of artisanal and specialty foods, the stylish – and much larger – new store will allow South China Seas to showcase, and expand upon, its astonishing selection of hard-to-source ingredients from around the world. Owners Don Dickson and Joyce Chang Dickson, and the South China Seas staff, are eager to introduce global cuisines to a broader audience in a sophisticated and more accessible space, incorporating better product display and lighting, plus a dedicated sampling and demonstration facility.
As the name suggests, South China Seas Trading Co. Limited’s original focus was on the foods of South East Asia. Over the years, in response to the evolving culinary interests of an increasingly adventurous and well-travelled customer base, product offerings expanded to include the essential ingredients of Asia, India, the Middle East and Mediterranean, the Caribbean and Latin America – an astonishingly diverse array of products including fresh and fragrant herbs and rare spices, sauces and condiments, fresh and dried chiles, exotic fruits and vegetables, wild local mushrooms, curries, chutneys and pickles, fragrant teas, fresh and dried pastas, uncommon rice varieties, seaweeds & sushi ingredients, dim sum & dumplings, fresh tortillas, Mexican cheeses and much, much more. South China Seas also carries an extensive selection of cookbooks with a focus on global culinary traditions, the work of groundbreaking chefs and books for culinary professionals. Specialty cookware (including huge granite mortar and pestles from Thailand) and tableware to enhance the experience of preparing and sharing a meal rounds out the inventory.
