Piri-Piri Hot Sauce
A hot sauce with an unusual provenance. Chilis from the New World were introduced to their colonies, including those in Africa, where they became naturalized, by the Portuguese. In Mozambique they became known as piri piri, which is generally translated as "pepper pepper". Elsewhere in Africa it is peri peri or pili pili. From Africa the chiles, and sauces made from them, made their way back to Portugal, where the African name is retained.
