We ship orders by Canada Post or Fedex, and use Canada Post and Fedex plug-ins to automatically calculate shipping costs at checkout. We do not mark up shipping charges, but the wide range of products that we ship requires us to use a variety of packaging material. This may result in very small discrepancies between calculated and actual shipping costs that we pay.

If the Canada Post and Fedex rates do not display in your checkout page, please check that you have entered your address and postal code accurately – rates will not calculate if the software does not recognize the address.

Canada Post will not accept shipments over certain weight and volume limits. If only Fedex rates display, your shipment is likely too big and/or too heavy for Canada Post to handle.

You will be charged the amount calculated at checkout (any additional costs will be absorbed by us and any savings will not be refunded).

We do not charge a handling fee.

Large orders are not much more expensive to ship than small ones. We encourage you to consolidate items to better amortize shipping costs. Combining orders between friends is also a good way to reduce costs, but we cannot bill multiple parties or ship to multiple addresses.

The delivery times estimated by Canada Post and Fedex are usually quite reliable, but in our experience shipments are sometimes delayed beyond the time frames given, particularly seasonally. South China Seas is not responsible for goods reaching you in the time estimated by Canada Post and Fedex. You are solely responsible for providing us with valid and accurate shipping information. Shipments that go astray or are otherwise delayed are not the responsibility of South China Seas Trading Co. Limited, (unless the delay results from our error. South China Seas Trading Co. Limited is not responsible for the collection or payment of any additional charges arising out of incorrect shipping information or other delivery problems.

Resolving any disputes with, or claims against Canada Post resulting from delivery delays is your responsibility, and other than verifying shipping documentation in our possession, South China Seas cannot assist in their resolution.

Orders will usually be shipped within two or three business days, but in any case, not more than four, provided the items purchased are in stock.

We reserve the right to use an alternative shipper (with equivalent or better service standards, and at no additional charge) if we feel that the likelihood of damage would be reduced – by packing the order in several boxes (which Canada Post will not accept) and using Greyhound, for example.

Products may also be ordered online and picked up in either of our retail stores.

Shipping Perishables

We ship a limited number of durable perishables. To ensure that you receive these products in good condition, select the Xpresspost or Fedex 2Day shipping option at checkout. If you are in a particularly remote location, and experience long Canada Post delivery times, even Xpresspost shipping may not be enough. If you are in a major urban centre in Western or Central Canada, or a non-major urban centre in BC, you may select Regular Parcel – at your own risk.

Cold Weather Alert!

Neither Canada Post nor Fedex transport shipments in heated environments during periods of very cold weather, and liquids in glass and plastic containers are subject to freezing and breakage. We use thermal packaging to protect liquids from extreme cold, but there is a small chance of damage, particularly when shipments are delayed.

If your order contains such items, we cannot guarantee that they will not be damaged under these circumstances. We will ship them, at your risk, but suggest that you either authorize us to hold the order until the temperature rises, and/or select a faster (but unfortunately more expensive) shipping option such as Xpresspost or FedEx 2Day to minimize your risk.

Unavailability of Goods

This website contains information regarding the availability of merchandise. While we do our best to keep this information current, the receipt of several orders in a short time frame and other factors outside our control may result in an item being unavailable when your order is processed, even though it is not flagged as such. If this circumstance arises, we will contact you by email and provide you with an estimate of when the item(s) will become available again. When possible, we will also provide a suggestion for a substitute product. You may, at your sole discretion:

• Agree to delay the order until the item(s) is available.
• Agree to substitute an alternate item or items, with an appropriate price adjustment.
• Agree to accept the order minus the missing item(s), with a credit for the price of the unavailable item.
• Cancel the order for a full refund.

Shipping Policies and Rates Subject to Change

Our shipping policies and/or Canada Post’s shipping rates are subject to change without notice. If changes occur after your order is processed but before it is shipped, the policy and/or rates most advantageous to you will be honored. Any changes made to policy and/or rates will be immediately evident in the checkout process, but please check this page regularly for a more-detailed explanation of current policy and rates.

Sorry, but current import restrictions (such as having to obtain pre-clearance for each item from Homeland Security) make shipping to the U.S. too costly to be practical – we hope that this will change.
